ASK AN EXPERT: THE TRUTH ABOUT BOX COLORING

ASK AN EXPERT: THE TRUTH ABOUT BOX COLORING

When it comes to coloring your hair, you want to make sure that you'll look fabulous without costing you your first born.  A lot of people turn to box coloring because it's cheap and easy, but what's the catch?  Anyone that's dyed their hair at home with box coloring a number of times knows that there is a price to pay - irreversible damage to your locks.  So, what's a girl to do?  We've brought in an expert on all things hair to help answer all of your burning hair coloring questions!
Readers, meet Master Stylist and hair expert extraordinaire, Danielle from The Kut Haus in Claremont, California - a modern and up to date salon with some of the most passionate stylists around.  Danielle's formally trained in all aspects of hair - from super curly kinky hair to fine thinning hair.  From well educated balayage (ombre) techniques to precision cutting.  She has had her work published in a number of magazines and worked backstage at Los Angeles fashion week as well as worked on set of a television series.  So, yeah - she's an expert!

Here's Danielle to give you some expert tips on hair coloring and why coloring at home with box dye is a major no no!
FUNBERGER: So, why exactly is box color such a bad thing?
DANIELLE: I want to share some professional advice with you since all you hear now days is, “OMG you're using box color?! Tisk! Tisk!” but no one really explains the reason why box color is bad…  Basically, box color is “one size fits all” and salon color is formulated to match all your hair need.  There are many variables that go into hair coloring - a lot of chemistry that most people are unaware of. There is a formulation that needs to take place by the professional stylist to make sure that the hair is treated the best way it can be.  Box color is formulated with the harshest chemicals to make sure that if someone with super coarse, resistant hair wants to use it they will see a difference in color.. BUT what about the other lady with the fine, bleach blonde hair? Same chemical? Yikes.
FUNBERGER: What makes the coloring used at a salon different than what you find in box dye?

DANIELLE: If you go to a salon, your stylist is sure to use top of the line color products and is able to assess the condition of your hair to make a formulation special to your hair needs.  You must NEVER trust advertisements in any industry, especially the hair color industry.  It's brainwashing at its finest.  The beautiful celebrities endorsing the product spend hundreds of dollars to have their hair look spot on, do you really think they are going to use a product that costs $5?? NO WAY.

FUNBERGER: You're right. But $5 is very enticing. Why do salons cost so much more?
DANIELLE: I understand the salon can get pricey but it’s the expertise of the professional that you’re paying for.  By doing your own hair you may be saving a buck, but when your hair color isn’t what you  thought it would be, you will end up spending a lot more money on a color correction at the salon than if you went to the salon in the first place.

Here are Danielle's tips to help maintain beautiful, long lasting color:
TIP 1:
Sulfate free shampoo!  Sulfates are the detergents that cleanse your hair and scalp of accumulated oils. It is very harmful and will eat at your color molecules. I recommend Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil Shampoo and conditioner. It is sulfate free but will still give you a lather which unlike other sulfate free shampoos they do not lather and it can be frustrating. Lather makes everyone's life a little easier!
TIP 2:
Wait a few days after color service to let the color molecules settle into the hair strands.
TIP 3:
Deep condition to lock in the color as well as add moisture that was taken during the color service.
TIP 4:
Rinse with COLD water…it closes the cuticles on each hair strand, thus allowing the color molecules to remain in the cortex (the middle of your hair strand where your permanent color lives)
Just like how we have to eat to survive, so does your hair. Same goes for heat styling, if you touch a curling iron to your skin it will burn you… it does the same thing to your hair - you just don’t feel it, which is why protecting your hair from heat gets neglected.

RECAP:
-Wait a few days to cleanse
-Sulfate free shampoo (Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil)
-Deep Condition
-Rinse with cold water!

If you're ever in Los Angeles County, be sure to stop by The Kut Haus in Claremont and ask for Danielle.  She'll be sure to give you the attention you and your hair deserve while making you feel right at home.  The Kut Hause Claremont is located at 123 Yale Avenue in Claremont, California.  Be sure to follow Danielle on Instagram @curlyd88 to catch all of her latest hair masterpieces!

So, maybe you're vegan like Lisa Simpson and Paul McCartney.  And aybe you're planning a trip soon to Las Vegas.  Well, then this guide is for you!  Let's face it, it can be very hard to find vegan eats while you're traveling.  This is especially the case in fabulous Las Vegas where the buffets are all-you-can-eat and the shrimp cocktails are always 99 cents.  Don't be too sad, though, because among the glitz, gambling and Celine Dion fans amazing vegan food can be found!  It's my honor to brig to you, as one vegan to another, an unabashed guide to eating vegan in the city of sin.  Viva Las Vegas!  Or should we say, Viva Las Vegan?!  Enjoy!

Oh my goodness.  La Cave is INCREDIBLE.  Okay, so this is the spot you must go to if you want to get dressed up for a nice dinner out on the town.  La Cave is located in the Wynn Hotel on the Las Vegas strip.  Steve Wynn, the owner and namesake of the Wynn Hotel, switched to a vegan diet in 2010 after watching the documentary Eating by Mike Anderson.  After becoming a vegan, Wynn announced that he would add animal-free menus to all his restaurants.  La Cave offers a drool-worthy selection of vegan options including mushroom tortellini with arugula and cashew "cream" sauce (OMG!) and vegan salt roasted beets with vegan cheese and pistachio (DROOLING!).  They've got a bunch of other vegan options on their menu, which you can check out here.  Oh, and I forgot to mention that La Cave is named "la cave" for a reason - you kind of feel like you're eating in a magical cave while you're there.  La Cave is located inside the Wynn Hotel at 3131 South Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109.

4) POP UP PIZZA

pizza1-1024x768

Who doesn't love pizza, am I right?!  Staying up way past your bedtime and having fun as you do in Vegas is pretty much a recipe for a pizza craving.  Thank goodness Pop Up Pizza exists to take care of even the worst pizza craving!  They're located near Fremont Street, so you can walk to them from the Las Vegas Strip, they deliver and they're open late every night - that's a home run in my book!  You can pretty much make any pizza vegan at Pop Up Pizza and all of their desserts are vegan friendly!  Now that's impressive!  Pop Up Pizza is located at 1 South Main Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101.

5) RED VELVET CAFE

IMG_8344

Anything with the words "red velvet" in it automatically makes me think delicious thoughts.  Red Velvet Cafe, boasting two locations in Las Vegas, is where you've got to go for dessert on your Vegas vegan venture.  Vanilla chocolate chip cake?  Yes please!  Double chocolate fudge cake?  Okay!  Those are just a few of the many amazing vegan desserts that Red Velvet has waiting for you to devour.  Red Velvet Cafe is located at 7875 W Sahara Avenue, Suite 103, Las Vegas, NV 89117 and Fashion Show Mall, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd, Suite 1850, Las Vegas, NV 89109.

If you eat at all of these spots on your next trip, you'll be like - "Put a fork in me, Las Vegas.  I'M DONE."

10 WEIRD MUSEUMS YOU SHOULD TOTALLY VISIT

The MOMA and Guggenheim are great, but let's take a minute to appreciate the little guy... you know, that weird estranged cousin of the big name museums.  Here's a list of 15 of the weirdest, most wonderful museums in the continental United States that you should totally visit the next time you get that itch for culture or the bizarre in your life.

1) INTERNATIONAL BANANA MUSEUM - MECCA, CA

The International Banana Museum needs no introduction, really.  It's just got a certain aPEEL... See what I did there?  Funny, right?  But seriously folks, this is a museum that's ripe for the picking.  Boasting over 200,000 banana related items in it's collection, this top banana is no joke.  You'll be seeing yellow by the time you leave, but you'll like it so much you won't want to split!

2) GRACELAND - MEMPHIS, TN

Graceland may be the former estate of Elvis Presley, but it's actually so much more.  While it is a shrine of sorts the the late king of rock and roll, it's also Elvis' final resting place and a destinations for fans of all generations.  Graceland is also kind of like a 1970s time capsule.  From green shag carpets to mirrored ceilings, Graceland screams seventies.  It's a place that everyone should visit at least once.   The upstairs where Elvis' bedroom was has been closed off to the public.  Only one person was able to sneak upstairs in the history of Graceland being open - Andy Kaufman.  Legend has it that Andy was able to sneak upstairs during a private tour and used the toilet.

3) NEON GRAVEYARD - LAS VEGAS, NV

Whoa!  This place is INCREDIBLE.  The Neon Graveyard (or Neon Boneyard to some, but officially The Neon Museum) is where Las Vegas neon signs go to retire.  With signs that date as far back to the 1950s, this place is a Las Vegas time capsule that you don't want to miss!  The museum runs daily guided tours for $18 - not bad when you're seeing such a huge part of Sin City's history.

4) THE BARKER CHARACTER, COMIC & CARTOON MUSEUM - CHESHIRE, CT

I'm from Connecticut so this is a personal favorite of mine, but anyone that was ever a child will love The Barker Character, Comic & Cartoon Museum.  From toys from Pee-Wee's Playhouse to Soupy Sales, this museum has got you covered.  This museum has one of the most extensive toy collections in the world AND they've got fun wooden cut-outs of cartoon characters on the front lawn that you can take pictures with.  If you're ever in the Northeast, please make time to visit this magical museum!

5) BARNEY SMITH'S TOILET SEAT ART MUSEUM - SAN ANTONIO, TX

Toilet seat art?!  Say what!  This is actually a real thing at Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum.  An artist by the name of Barney Smith does art on toilet seats!  Forget canvas - Barney's paving a new path in the world of art.  Let's just hope he cleans these seats before he paints them, am I right?  Thank you, America, for making it possible for a man with a dream to paint toilet seats and open a museum.  Just a fact that this is a thing proves that freedom rings in America.  So, thank you America and thank you, Barney Smith!

6) BIGFOOT DISCOVERY MUSEUM - FELTON, CA

Bigfoot is real and there's a museum dedicated to him to prove it!  At The Bigfoot Discovery Museum you can learn everything you've ever wanted to know and more about Bigfoot himself.  It's pretty weird that a guy who's rarely seen by anyone has a museum solely dedicated to him, but weird is good, right?

7) BURLINGAME MUSEUM OF PEZ MEMORABILIA - BURLINGAME, CA

Pez!  The candy that's also a toy and a collectible and overall just the best!  Who wouldn't want to visit a museum dedicated to this curious confection?  Only terrible people, of course, which isn't you.  You're wonderful, which is why you've got to visit The Burlingame Museum Of Pez Memorabilia!

8) SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER MUSEUM - GATLINBURG, TN

The Salt And Pepper Shake Museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee is pure kitsch.  Actually, anyone that's ever visited Galinburg, Tennessee will tell you that Gatlinburg itself is pure kitsch, but that's another story.  If you're ever in Dolly Parton's neck of the woods on your way to The Smokies, be sure to stop by this museum for a very flavorful and not-bland-at-all experience.

9) THE CENTER FOR PUPPETRY ARTS - ATLANTA, GA

If you're not terrified of puppets, then you should definitely visit The Center For Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia.  This museum is for people who love puppetry and people who are interested in the art.  It's also for small children and anyone that doesn't have a phobia of clowns, because there are a lot of those at this place.

10) PINBALL HALL OF FAME - LAS VEGAS, NV

Hold up!  Did someone say pinball?!  I'm sold!  Okay, so The Pinball Hall Of Fame is a MUST on your next visit to Las Vegas.  While pinball machines aren't typically the shiny, chiming machines that you want to play in Sin City, you should definitely make an exception.  I mean, this is a museum full of pinball machines.  PINBALL MACHINES.  Enough said.

What's the weirdest you've ever been to?  Leave a comment below with your story!

If you're a girl that's hopped aboard the nail art bandwagon recently, odds are that you've got every shade of nail polish imaginable ready for your next phalange-fied masterpiece.  Before you put on your next coat of polish, think about this - there's a reason why most nail polishes stink and are recommended for use in a ventilated area.  Duh!  It's because they're loaded with tons of toxic, flammable chemicals!

Piggy Paint founder, Melanie Hurley, saw the need for a safe, non-toxic nail polish that would be safe for girls of all ages to wear when her daughters became interested in wearing nail polish.  She has since set forth on a mission to create beautifully vibrant, kid-friendly nail polish that's water-based and good for you and the environment!

Piggy Paint is free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate and acetone… all the yucky stuff that you may not even realize you're putting in your body when you paint your nails.  They even have a color called Forever Fancy.  I want to be fancy forever!  Don't you?

Piggy Paint is coming out with a new line of nail polish this spring called SOPHi just for adults that's longer lasting, odorless, and hypoallergenic with maximum durability. Proudly made in the U.S.A., this advanced water-based formula leaves nails healthy and does not cause them to yellow or become brittle.  Now that natural & SOPHisticated nail polish!

Piggy Paint is all kinds of awesome.  Imagine getting a manicure and never having to worry about harmful chemicals on your hands again.  Remember, you use your hands to eat and what you put on your body matters just as much as what you put in it.  The ladies over at Piggy Paint have been kind enough to offer an exciting giveaway exclusively to FUNBERGER readers!  They're giving away their Color Me Happy gift set to one lucky FUNBERGER reader! It retails for $55.99 and contains 8 vibrant nail polishes. Think of all the awesome nail art you can do with that!  To enter follow @_FUNBERGER on Twitter and leave a comment below with your e-mail address telling us what your favorite nail polish color is and why.  Contest is open from February 26th, 2015 to March 5th, 2015.  The winner will be chosen at midnight on March 5th, 2015.  Thanks for entering and good luck!

10 BRUTAL STRUGGLES ONLY VEGANS WILL UNDERSTAND

10 BRUTAL STRUGGLES ONLY VEGANS WILL UNDERSTAND

Being a vegan is great, but sometimes it’s a struggle.

1. Going out to eat at a restaurant whose only vegan option is a garden salad.

The struggle is real.

2. Checking the ingredients in EVERYTHING.

“Contains carmine?! NO!!”
*carmine is a commonly used food coloring made from insect shells. Ew.

3. Being the only friend at the pizza party who has to order their own personal pizza without cheese.

“Mmm. I just love saucy bread.”

4. Dealing with the guilt of accidentally eating meat/eggs/cheese/dairy.

“I’ll never forgive myself!”

5. Ordering a side of olive oil at a restaurant that serves bread because you can’t eat the butter.

Paula Deen would not approve.

6. Having to bring your own veggie dogs to the BBQ.

Hot, squeaky, and delicious!

7. Calling ahead to make sure that your friends and/or family make reservations at a restaurant where you can actually eat.

“Sorry, but that steakhouse just isn’t gonna cut it.”

8. Debating whether eating honey is an OK things to do as a vegan.

Why is bee puke so appealing anyway?

9. Having to bring your own vegan cream cheese with you when you go to a bagel shop.

It’s 2015! Get with the program, bagel shops of the world. Not all of us eat dairy!

10. Defending your decision to be vegan multiple times a day.

“Just let me eat my lettuce in peace, OK?!”

But at the end of the day, even if it’s sometimes hard, you do it because you care.

And that makes it all worth it.
